What Are the Different Kinds of Interior Trim?

When used correctly, interior trim can help a room look more cohesive and appealing. But you must use the right one for each room. Here’s an overview of the different types.

Using Interior Trim

Interior trim serves the practical purpose of bridging the small gaps between the floor, ceiling, walls and openings. The trim also serves as the baseline that you can follow when decorating the room. Well-chosen interior trim looks like it’s been in place forever. You can’t imagine the room without it. When choosing the interior trim for a room you need to think about the proportions of the room as well as its time period.

Kinds of Interior Trim

Here are some common types of interior trim.

 

• Crown molding – This refers to the angled piece of trim that covers the corner between the ceiling and the wall. Crown molding comes in many different profiles. In general, wider pieces of crown molding make a room look more formal while smaller pieces look more modern.
• Window and door casing – This trim creates a frame around the openings of a room. Their job is to hide gaps around the windows and doorways of a room. Window and door trim often coordinate. The proportions of the window casing vary, however, because windows come in different sizes.
• Wainscoting – This refers to the decorative paneling used on the lower half of walls. Wainscoting is often painted or stained to contrast with the wall above it. Wainscoting used to waterproof the lower half of plaster walls, but it is now purely decorative.
• Shiplap paneling – This refers to wide and flat boards that are placed horizontally and lock together. This paneling is most often used to create a rustic accent wall. Shiplap was often used to create interior walls in the South.
• Baseboard – This trim piece is used to bridge the gap between the floor and the wall. Homes with very high ceilings often have baseboards that are several inches high. Modern homes often have simple baseboard designs.
